OpenAI Targets a Smarter Way to Search with Prototype SearchGPT

This wild week continues...
At a Glance
The summer of AI is here and it's the gift that keeps on giving. OpenAI has announced the launch of its newest prototype, SearchGPT. It is an AI-powered search engine that leverages OpenAI’s foundation models to provide more intuitive and context-aware search results, ultimately aiming to redefine the search experience for users.
Deeper Learning
How Will it Work?: SearchGPT begins with a large textbox asking, “What are you looking for?” Instead of just listing links, it organizes and summarizes information. For example, it provides summaries of music festivals with descriptions and attribution links. Another example includes guidance on planting tomatoes, explaining different varieties. Users can ask follow-up questions or explore additional relevant links via a sidebar.

The Competition is Fierce: By entering the search engine market, OpenAI is positioning SearchGPT as a direct competitor to established players like Google and now Perplexity. The AI-first approach is expected to offer a unique edge in terms of user experience and search accuracy, although it will be interesting to see if this evolves into a multimodal search capability.
Backing from News Outlets: In the blog post, OpenAI highlighted that SearchGPT was developed with input from various news partners, including The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, and Vox Media. Publishers can manage their appearance in OpenAI’s search features and opt out of having their content used for model training while still being included in search results.
Integration and Accessibility: Since this is still a prototype, OpenAI is planning to pilot SearchGPT with about 10,000 users to start with. Eventually, this will be natively embedded in ChatGPT. The waitlist is open and you can sign up here!
So What?
OpenAI’s SearchGPT is a step towards bringing ChatGPT closer to the real-time web. This new capability can let us all have AI embedded right in search, and this will be even more powerful if it's multimodal. This is of course a direct challenge to Google and Perplexity, but hopefully the right one towards democratizing AI.
SearchGPT will be free during its initial launch, and yes we are already on the waitlist ;)
