Google Drops Custom Gems and Imagen 3

Gemini is so back…

At a Glance

Google's Gemini is receiving a significant upgrade with "Custom Gems" and enhancements in Imagen 3. “Custom Gems” is a feature that allows users to create personalized AI chatbots tailored to specific needs, akin to ChatGPT's Custom GPTs. Let's hope Imagen 3 doesn't drop the ball as Google has done before with questionable image generation…

Custom Gems: Users of Gemini will now be able to create their own AI chatbots, customizing everything from the bot’s tone and personality to the specific tasks it can handle. Whether you need a bot for customer support, personal assistance, or even niche tasks like language learning, Custom Gems make it easy to have an AI by your side. It will be rolled out to Gemini Advanced users according to Google, but you can still play around with the premade Gems in the Gemini interface.

Imagen 3 Enhancements: Alongside Custom Gems, Google has also upgraded its Imagen 3 image generation model. The new model comes with build-in safeguards to adhere to design principles, and performs favorably compared to other image generation models. Google claims Imagen 3 improves user experience in generating images of people by avoiding photorealistic, identifiable individuals, depictions of minors, and inappropriate content. While not every image will be perfect, Google is committed to refining the tool based on user feedback and plans to gradually expand its availability to more users and languages (currently supported in 150+ langauges).

Seamless Integration: The updates to Gemini are designed with user experience in mind, ensuring that these new features integrate smoothly with Google’s existing ecosystem. Custom Gems, for instance, can be used across various Google platforms, from Workspace to Android.

So What?

Google’s latest Gemini update is another great enhancement to its AI platform. The ability to provide customizability across chatbots is powerful, as we've seen with ChatGPT already. Specifically, I am looking forward to seeing how Imagen 3 fares among an already crowded space of SOTA image generation models. At this point, it seems like Google is still playing catchup instead of putting out cutting-edge, novel features.
